Fort Pierce, also known as the Sunrise City, has a rich history as the hub of St. Lucie County, Florida due in part to its ocean access. A part of the area known as the Treasure Coast because a fleet of Spanish treasure ships sunk off its coast in 1715, Fort Pierce is one of the oldest communities on the east coast of Florida. Treasure from those ships is still being brought up today, but the richest treasure is the area itself, with the beautiful weather, beaches, fishing, golf courses, marinas, wildlife, and all things outdoors that attract people to Florida.
Our city, situated between Port Saint Lucie and Vero Beach, is a diverse and neighborly community, with friendly locals and frequent visitors who enjoy all it has to offer. Downtown retains its old Florida charm yet has welcomed revitalization. Our historic waterfront downtown offers shopping, lots of delicious dining options, a marina, great fishing and a range of entertainment and activities from the famous Farmers’ Market on Saturday mornings, Friday Fest on the first Friday of each month, the Jazz Market and the city-owned-and-operated historic, 1,200-seat Sunrise Theatre for the Performing Arts.
Fort Pierce is also home to educational and research facilities like the top-ranked Indian River State College, Smithsonian Marine Station, Manatee Observation & Education Center and Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution at Florida Atlantic University. The Navy SEAL Museum, the A.E. Backus Museum, Fort Pierce Inlet State Park, and Heathcote Botanical Gardens are also among the many local attractions.
